Headingley at a glance
Headingley is a rural municipality directly west of Winnipeg, with about 3,600 people in 2016. The Trans-Canada Highway and the Assiniboine River both run through it, and the community of Headingley sits along Provincial Road 334.
What that means for your heating
Homes are a mix of acreages, newer country residential developments and older farmhouses. Not every property is on natural gas, so some rely on propane, electric heat or heat pumps; ask a technician what makes sense for your fuel. See cold-climate heat pumps.
Prairie exposure
Open fields mean strong winds, drifting snow and very cold nights. A furnace failure on an acreage can be serious, so annual service and a backup heat plan are worth having; see furnace tune-ups.
Named after Leeds
The municipality takes its name from Headingley, a suburb of Leeds in England. Oliver and Mary Gowler, hired by the Hudson's Bay Company, started the first farm here after the 1852 Red River flood, and Reverend Griffith Owen Corbett organised a new parish west of St. James soon after. Older farmhouses may have boilers or aging oil and propane equipment worth upgrading; see boilers and hot water heat.
