St. Vital at a glance
St. Vital is a ward and community in south-central Winnipeg, bounded by the Red River to the west and the Seine River to the east, with about 67,600 people in 2016. It includes neighbourhoods such as Norberry, Glenwood, Elm Park and newer areas like Sage Creek, Royalwood and Meadowood.
What that means for your heating
St. Vital's housing spans several eras, from older bungalows near St. Mary's Road to post-war homes and brand-new subdivisions in the south and east. Older homes may still have mid-efficiency furnaces vented through chimneys; replacing them with high-efficiency models means new venting. See furnace replacement.
Two rivers
Homes near the Red and Seine rivers can have damp basements in spring, which affects furnaces, humidifiers and condensate pumps that sit on the floor. Keep the furnace area dry and check floor drains each spring.
One of Manitoba's oldest settlements
Francophone settlers established St. Vital in 1822, making it the second-oldest permanent settlement in Manitoba after Kildonan. Archbishop Taché named it in 1860, and it became a rural municipality in 1880 before joining Winnipeg in 1972. Riel House, Louis Riel's family home, is now a National Historic Site. Older character homes here often benefit from a ductless system for summer cooling; see ductless mini-splits.
