River Heights at a glance
River Heights is a community area in Winnipeg bordered by the Assiniboine River to the north, Cambridge Street to the east, Taylor Avenue to the south and Route 90 to the west. It includes neighbourhoods such as Lord Roberts, Riverview, Roslyn and River-Osborne.
What that means for your heating
Most of River Heights was built after the First World War, so many homes are character houses with boilers and radiators, or furnaces added later to old ductwork. Small ducts, cold upstairs rooms and old boilers are common complaints; see boilers and hot water heat.
Cooling older homes
Character homes without ducts can be hard to cool in summer. Ductless mini-splits are a popular way to add air conditioning without opening plaster walls; see ductless mini-splits.
Oak, Elm and Ash
The area was annexed by the City of Winnipeg in 1882, though most building came later. Some eastern streets are named after trees such as Oak, Elm and Ash, and others after places such as Waterloo and Oxford. River Heights and West Fort Rouge once made up the South End of the old city. Tall, narrow houses with steep stairs mean equipment often has to be carried down tight basement steps, which a technician will want to know about when quoting.
