Check the basics
Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature, with fresh batteries. Check the breaker for the furnace and look at the filter; a badly clogged filter can make the furnace overheat and shut itself off.
The furnace switch
Most furnaces have a power switch that looks like a light switch, on or near the furnace or at the top of the basement stairs. It's easy to flip off by mistake.
Frosted or blocked vents
High-efficiency furnaces vent through plastic pipes on an outside wall or the roof. In deep cold, snow, drifting and frost can block them, and the furnace shuts down for safety. See frozen furnace vents.
Starts then stops
A furnace that lights and then shuts off after a few seconds often has a dirty flame sensor or an ignition problem. Repeated tries and lockouts need a technician.
Cold air from the vents
If the blower runs but the air is cold, the burners may not be lighting, or the furnace may be in a safety lockout. Note any flashing light codes on the control board.
Keep the house safe
While waiting in a cold snap, close curtains, shut doors to unused rooms and open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls. Never use a gas oven or barbecue to heat the house.
Gas and CO safety
If you smell gas, leave the house and phone your gas utility's emergency line from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out and phone 911.
Get it fixed
Tell the technician what the furnace is doing, any light codes and its age. Send a request and an HVAC technician will get in touch.
