Transcona at a glance
Transcona is a ward and suburb about ten kilometres east of downtown Winnipeg. It was a separate town from 1912 and a city from 1961 until it joined Winnipeg in 1972, and it's mainly a working-class residential area with some light industry.
What that means for your heating
Most of Transcona's homes were built several decades ago, with newer developments such as Canterbury Park, Lakeside Meadows and Mission Gardens in the east and northwest. Many older bungalows have original ductwork and furnaces that are well past their prime; see furnace repair.
Open to the wind
On the eastern edge of the city, beside the Red River Floodway and the Perimeter Highway, homes catch the full force of winter winds. Drifting snow can bury furnace intake and exhaust pipes on the windward side; see frozen furnace vents.
A railway town
Transcona began in 1908 when the Grand Trunk Pacific and National Transcontinental railways chose the flat land east of Winnipeg for their repair shops. CNR locomotive 2747, built in 1926, was the first of 33 engines built entirely at the Transcona Shops and now stands in Rotary Heritage Park on Plessis Road. Many homes here are compact bungalows where a high-efficiency furnace and central air fit easily in the basement.
